Bodhidarma

The Daruma is made in the image of the Buddhist monk Bodhidarma (jap. Daruma). In the 5th century AD he travelled from India to China, in order to instruct the monks in the teachings of Zen-Buddhism. During his travels Bodhidarma spent many years in the Shaolin-monastery, teaching the art of meditation, Yoga and martial arts – for that he is known today as the originator of Kung-Fu. Legend has it that he reached enlightenment by meditating in front of a rock for nine years. Because of the fact that he sat in the lotus-seat for all of this time, and therefore had no need for his arms and legs, the Daruma has no limbs and is just a well rounded torso.
